Women in Australia (and globally) still disproportionately shoulder unpaid care: children, ageing parents, household labour. The ‘caregiving penalty’ cuts into earnings and retirement balances via longer career breaks, fewer annual super contributions, and less compound growth over decades. From July 2025 super is paid on parental leave, a long-overdue step towards addressing some of these structural inequalities.
